CHAPTER 10
Brigid backed away from the body and let Sheriff Davis take over. It didnât take long for him to confirm that Micha was dead. Brigid had thought the same, but sheâd continued her efforts to try and revive him, just in case.
âThis donât look good,â Sheriff Davis sighed as he took in the balloon and the area around them. An ambulance and a couple of on-duty deputies arrived and the deputies began to secure the area as a crime scene. âWeâre gonnaâ have to find out who he is and contact his next of kin.â
âWe know who he is,â Linc said, his face drawn and pale. Heâd been anxiously shifting back and forth on his feet, as if he wanted to be anywhere but right there. Brigid couldnât blame him. He wasnât used to dealing with crime scenes. âHeâs a guest at our B & B, and he was in town doing an online travel show.â He continued to explain to the Sheriff about Micha and his show âTake Five.â
âWe can talk with his cameraman and also look in our records for an emergency contact. We added it to our forms after our last incident,â Linc said. Brigid recalled the time that one of their guests had been murdered in the forest behind her home. It had been a horrible time, but she and Sheriff Davis had found the killer.
Neither one of them had felt good about putting the killer in handcuffs. Sometimes catching the bad guy almost made you feel like you were one yourself.
âGood, why donât you take one of my deputies and head over to the B & B so you can get that information for us. We need it as soon as possible. Where do you think the camera guy is now?â Sheriff Davis asked.
Brigid shook her head, âI donât know. Maybe heâs back in his room?â She hadnât seen either one of them after Micha and Kyle had visited their booth earlier in the day. She had no idea if Kyle was back at the B & B or still enjoying himself at the carnival. Although she hadnât noticed him anywhere, that didnât mean anything. She hadnât exactly been on the lookout for him.
âWe can check that, too,â Linc said. âIf heâs at the B & B, weâll be able to talk with him.â
âIâll ride with you,â Deputy Keegan volunteered. âWeâll let the sheriff and Brigid handle this for a moment. We can deal with the easier stuff.â It was clear Deputy Keegan could tell that Linc needed to get away from the scene, so that he didnât have to look any longer at Micha Barnettâs dead body. He was having a common reaction to a scene like the one before them. It was as if he didnât want to look, but his eyes kept returning to it on their own.
Brigid mouthed âthank youâ to Lindsay, knowing that Linc was probably pretty shaken up at this point, but she needed to stay with Sheriff Davis, since she was the one who had found the body.
